The law does not apply to employee data or data collected through business-to-business contacts, meaning California remains the only state that has included those groups in privacy laws. The Iowa law is set to go into effect in January 2025.Īs with the other five states that have enacted privacy laws, the Iowa law applies to companies based in the state as well as to the treatment of personal data of residents of that state, regardless of where the company is located. 1 While this means there is yet another state with a privacy law that companies must comply with, the Iowa law closely tracks those passed in Virginia and Utah, and should impose few new obligations on companies already complying with the laws of those states.
